IOC Bans Indonesia From Hosting Events Over Israel Gymnast Ban
Indonesia has refused to issue visas to Israeli gymnasts for the 2025 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Jakarta, citing concerns over security, public order, and adherence to its laws and constitution. The Indonesian government, represented by Youth and Sports Minister Erick Thohir, acknowledged the consequences of this decision, including a ban by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Indonesia hosting Olympic events until it guarantees access to all athletes regardless of nationality. The IOC's executive board condemned Indonesia's action as discriminatory and has ceased dialogue with the Indonesian National Olympic Committee regarding future hosting rights while urging international federations not to hold events in Indonesia without guarantees for athlete access. The Israeli Gymnastics Federation appealed the visa ban to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, but the appeal was rejected, preventing Israeli athletes from participating. Indonesia maintains support for Palestinians as part of its rationale, and despite the IOC's sanctions, the Indonesian government remains committed to its national sports development plans and continuing participation in international sports. The situation highlights ongoing tensions between political considerations and the Olympic Movement's principles of non-discrimination and universal athlete participation.
