Orb App Launches to Enhance Internet Connection Insights

Doug Suttles, the founder and former CEO of Ookla (creator of Speedtest.net), has launched Orb—a new app that goes beyond traditional speed tests by measuring not only download and upload speeds, but also latency, jitter, and packet loss to assess the overall stability and reliability of internet connections. Developed with Ookla executive Jamie Steven, Orb provides users with a holistic dashboard that generates an 'Orb Score' summarizing connection quality, and offers actionable recommendations if issues are detected. The app supports monitoring over multiple time intervals and allows users to track several devices simultaneously, with options for always-on monitoring via platforms like Raspberry Pi. Orb is available for all major platforms, including Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android, and is free to use. Future updates will include 'recipes' for testing specific services such as YouTube and Microsoft Teams, catering to users who want to understand real-world performance beyond raw speed numbers. The app aims to empower consumers with deeper insights into their internet performance, enabling proactive problem-solving.
