Gord Herbert Named Head Coach of Canada's Men's Basketball Team

Gordie Herbert has been appointed as the new head coach of Canada’s senior men’s basketball team, taking over from Jordi Fernández and set to lead the program through the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. Herbert, a Canadian with extensive international experience, most notably led Germany to a gold medal at the 2023 FIBA World Cup and a strong showing at the Paris 2024 Olympics. He has previously worked with Canada Basketball as both a head coach during qualifying windows and as an assistant, and also played for Canada at the 1984 Olympics. General manager Rowan Barrett cited Herbert's championship pedigree and understanding of the international game as key factors in the hire. The Canadian men's team is coming off a historic run, including a 2023 World Cup bronze and a top-five Olympic finish, and is expected to maintain a strong core of NBA talent for upcoming major tournaments. Herbert will also help develop the next generation of Canadian players, starting with a training camp ahead of the FIBA AmeriCup.
