Japan PM Nominates Trump For Nobel Prize
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi told U.S. President Donald Trump during their first meeting in Tokyo that she has nominated him for next year’s Nobel Peace Prize, and the White House and multiple outlets reported she announced this publicly and, by some accounts, privately presented paperwork. The two leaders signed documents proclaiming a “Golden Age” in the U.S.–Japan alliance that include trade measures and cooperation on rare-earth and other critical minerals aimed at countering Chinese export restrictions. Takaichi praised Trump’s recent mediation efforts and offered symbolic gestures such as 250 cherry trees and July 4 fireworks as part of the visit. The nomination adds to endorsements from foreign leaders including Cambodia’s Hun Manet and Pakistan’s Shehbaz Sharif. Trump did not win this year’s Nobel Peace Prize. The announcement came amid Trump’s Asia trip during which he sought large Japanese investment and trade deals.
