Over 20 Nations Pledge to Remove Russian Oil, Gas from Global Markets
More than 20 countries supporting Ukraine have pledged to remove Russian oil and gas from global markets in a coordinated effort to cut funding for President Vladimir Putin's war machine and pressure him to negotiate an end to the conflict. This announcement came during the “Coalition of the Willing” summit in London, hosted by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and attended by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who urged allies to impose sanctions on all Russian oil companies and related infrastructure. Recent sanctions by the UK, US, and EU have targeted Russia's largest oil companies and liquefied natural gas exports, aiming to intensify economic pressure as the war approaches its fourth winter. The summit also focused on bolstering Ukraine's defenses, including strengthening its air defenses and protecting its power grid from frequent Russian attacks. Starmer highlighted the need to rapidly utilize frozen Russian assets to provide financial support to Ukraine and reaffirmed the coalition's commitment to maintaining military pressure on Putin. Despite Zelensky's requests, US President Trump has yet to approve the supply of long-range missiles that could strike deep inside Russia, while Putin has warned of an overwhelming response to such attacks.
