Trump to Raise Jimmy Lai With Xi

President Trump said he will raise the case of Hong Kong media mogul Jimmy Lai with Chinese President Xi Jinping during their upcoming meeting after a bipartisan group of more than 30 U.S. senators, led by Rick Scott and James Risch, urged him to press for Lai’s release. The senators called Lai, a 78-year-old British citizen and founder of the pro-democracy Apple Daily, a political prisoner whose health is deteriorating and urged immediate humanitarian action, saying his representatives would ensure he could leave Hong Kong if freed. Lai has been detained since 2020 under Beijing’s national security law and denies charges that he conspired to incite foreign sanctions. Trump plans to raise Lai’s case amid a broader agenda with Xi that includes trade, tariffs, fentanyl and rare-earths restrictions, and Chinese authorities have warned against what they view as external interference, making the demand diplomatically sensitive.
