Columbia to Unveil Dawn Staley Statue April 30

The City of Columbia will unveil a statue honoring South Carolina women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley on April 30 at the intersection of Senate and Lincoln streets, next to the University of South Carolina Pastides Alumni Center. The $140,000 statue, created in partnership with Statues for Equality, commemorates Staley’s remarkable achievements, including three NCAA titles, seven Final Four appearances, and nine SEC championships during her 17 seasons leading the Gamecocks. Staley’s impact extends beyond her championship record, as she has been recognized for her leadership, community empowerment, and role in inspiring future generations. The statue’s pose depicts Staley clipping the net after the Gamecocks’ first Final Four trip in 2015. Local officials emphasize that the monument will serve as a symbol of excellence and resilience for Columbia and South Carolina. The public is invited to the unveiling ceremony, with parking available in nearby city decks.
