Police Seek Suspect in $25,000 Scam
An elderly woman with dementia in Asheboro, North Carolina, was scammed out of $25,000 by a man posing as a tech support representative. The scam began when the woman sought help for her mobile device and contacted a fake number online. Over a few days, the scammer manipulated her into sending $4,000 in gift cards and withdrawing $25,000 in cash, which she handed over at a gas station. Detective Marcus Pierce of the Asheboro Police Department is investigating the case and has called for public assistance in identifying the suspect, who was seen leaving in a 2024 Chrysler Pacifica with a Florida license plate. The police emphasize the importance of vigilance and encourage residents to seek help if they encounter suspicious requests for money.
