BCCI Eyes 94-Match IPL Season by 2028

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering expanding the Indian Premier League (IPL) to a 94-match season by 2028, implementing a full home-and-away format with each of the 10 teams playing every other team twice. Efforts to expand to 84 matches by 2025 were shelved due to a packed cricket calendar and concerns over excessive double-headers. Expansion plans are being discussed not only within the BCCI and ICC but also with broadcasters, who have raised concerns about viewer fatigue and mid-season dips in audience numbers. BCCI chairman Arun Dhumal confirmed there are no immediate plans to add new franchises, as maintaining tournament quality remains a priority. The IPL's financial strength continues to grow, with record-breaking media rights deals and strong digital viewership enhancing its global influence.
