Trump Orders Major Expansion of Homeless Vet Housing

President Trump signed an executive order establishing the National Center for Warrior Independence at the West Los Angeles VA campus, aiming to provide housing and comprehensive support to up to 6,000 homeless veterans by 2028—a significant increase from the VA’s earlier plan for 1,200 units by 2030. The center will offer housing, substance abuse treatment, employment support, and will be open to veterans nationwide. Funding will be redirected from services formerly allocated to undocumented immigrants. The order also directs the VA to restore accountability, improve access to care, and address employee misconduct. The Secretary of Housing and Urban Development is tasked with providing housing vouchers for homeless veterans. These measures follow longstanding legal and bureaucratic delays as well as recent judicial mandates to expand veteran housing at the West LA VA campus.
