Amazon Unveils Blue Jay Robot System, Smart Glasses to Enhance Warehouse, Delivery Efficiency

Amazon has introduced Blue Jay, an advanced robotic system designed to streamline warehouse operations by combining multiple tasks such as picking, sorting, and consolidating into a single, coordinated process using robotic arms with suction cups. Currently being tested at a South Carolina facility, Blue Jay can handle approximately 75% of items processed and aims to reduce repetitive lifting and physical strain on workers while improving efficiency and saving space. This innovation builds on Amazon's existing robotics portfolio, including Vulcan and Project Eluna, which uses AI to anticipate bottlenecks and enhance productivity across fulfillment centers. Amazon emphasizes that these technologies not only accelerate delivery speeds but also promote safer, more ergonomic work environments and create opportunities for employee upskilling and career growth. In addition to warehouse automation, Amazon has unveiled AI-powered augmented reality glasses for delivery drivers, featuring package scanning, navigation, and safety alerts. Despite concerns about job impacts due to automation, Amazon maintains that these advancements improve worker safety and operational efficiency while fostering new roles and training programs.
