Prince Harry Loses Appeal Over UK Security Protection
Prince Harry has lost his appeal to reinstate automatic, taxpayer-funded police protection for himself and his family during visits to the UK, following the government's 2020 decision to provide such security only on a case-by-case basis. The Court of Appeal unanimously upheld the Home Office's approach, ruling that Harry's arguments—while described as 'powerful and moving'—did not constitute a valid legal challenge. The judges found no procedural error or unfair treatment by the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures (Ravec), which made the original decision after Harry stepped back from royal duties. Harry's legal team argued that he was 'singled out' for inferior treatment, raising concerns about his family's safety, but the court maintained that the process used was appropriate and justified. The ruling means Harry and his family are not entitled to the same level of protection as working royals, and he may face significant legal costs as a result. While it is possible Harry could seek to appeal to the Supreme Court, such an application would require special permission and is considered unlikely to succeed.
