Majority of SNP Voters Support Nuclear Power Inclusion
Recent polling commissioned by the campaign group Britain Remade shows that a majority of Scots, including over half of SNP voters, now support including nuclear power in Scotland’s energy mix to achieve its 2045 net zero target. While the SNP has historically opposed new nuclear projects, 52% of its 2021 voters back nuclear power, with only a third opposed. Overall, 56% of Scottish adults favor nuclear energy to cut emissions and secure energy supply, amid concerns that renewables alone may not provide consistent energy. Critics argue that the SNP’s stance is harming Scotland’s energy security and economic potential, with Labour pledging to end the block on new nuclear if elected. Proponents also highlight the potential for small modular reactors to transform the economy and provide necessary backup for renewables. The findings have intensified calls for the SNP to reconsider its position as Scotland faces uncertainty over its future nuclear capacity.
