Netflix Plans Black Hole Series Directed by Jane Schoenbrun

Netflix is moving forward with a highly anticipated adaptation of Charles Burns' graphic novel Black Hole, now set as a TV series with a straight-to-series order. The series, directed and written by Jane Schoenbrun, known for indie horror films like I Saw the TV Glow, explores the story of 1970s Seattle teenagers who contract a virus transmitted through sexual contact that causes them to physically mutate into monsters. This adaptation marks the first television project for Schoenbrun and is co-produced by Netflix, New Regency, and Plan B, the latter having been involved in earlier failed film adaptation attempts. The narrative focuses on a small town, Roosevelt, where the myth of the "bug" virus affects teens, following a character named Chris who becomes infected and faces dangers including a serial killer targeting those like her. Black Hole's mix of coming-of-age themes, horror, and sci-fi elements draws comparisons to Netflix’s Stranger Things, offering a similar eerie atmosphere and period setting.
