German Students Disciplined for Neo-Nazi Gestures
German high school students have caused public outrage after two separate incidents of neo-Nazi gestures and nationalist chants at Holocaust memorial sites. Four students from Scultetus High School in Görlitz were photographed making a white supremacist 'OK' gesture at Auschwitz and were disciplined with community service involving people with disabilities. In a separate incident, students from Helmholtz School in Bielefeld sang the neo-Nazi chant 'Germany for the Germans, foreigners out' at the Bergen-Belsen memorial, drawing condemnation from authorities and the public. While the Nazi salute is illegal in Germany, the 'OK' gesture is not, but both acts have been widely criticized as disrespectful. School and education officials have called for increased vigilance as such incidents remain a recurring issue. Police have launched investigations, and the cases have intensified debate about far-right extremism among German youth.
