PacificLight Plans 670MW Hydrogen-Ready CCGT with Battery Storage in Singapore by 2029
PacificLight Power (PLP), backed by First Pacific Group and Meralco PowerGen, has awarded an EPC contract to a consortium of Mitsubishi Power and Jurong Engineering Limited to build Singapore’s largest, hydrogen-ready, combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plant on Jurong Island. The 670-megawatt plant, set to begin operations in 2029, will integrate a large-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) and operate initially on 30 percent hydrogen, with the capability to transition to 100 percent hydrogen in the future. It will use Mitsubishi Power’s M701JAC gas turbine, the world's most efficient large-frame model, achieving over 64 percent combined cycle efficiency and proven reliability with three million operational hours. The plant is designed to power more than 965,000 four-room flats and represents a key step in Singapore's decarbonization efforts, aligning with the national hydrogen strategy aiming to supply up to half the country's power from hydrogen by 2050. PLP CEO Yu Tat Ming highlighted the project as a significant advance in providing cleaner, resilient energy while future-proofing infrastructure to meet growing energy demands. The project reflects a strong collaboration combining Mitsubishi Power’s advanced turbine technology with Jurong Engineering’s EPC expertise to support Singapore’s sustainable energy future.
