Kentucky launches 'Skip the Line' initiative for driver licensing

Kentucky has launched a 'Skip the Line' initiative to help residents avoid long waits at Driver Licensing Regional Offices, particularly as demand surges ahead of the REAL ID federal enforcement date. The initiative offers several remote renewal options, including online, in-office with expedited processing, and mail-in renewals, all of which require completion of a vision screening. These measures aim to reduce wait times for those renewing standard licenses or REAL IDs, as well as those taking advantage of newly required vision screenings. However, in-person visits are still necessary for certain services, such as changing personal information or obtaining a new permit. The Transportation Cabinet has also expanded staffing and upgraded technology to improve service. Officials emphasize that May 7 is the start of federal REAL ID enforcement for specific purposes, but residents can still obtain a REAL ID after that date using alternative forms of identification if needed.
