German Defense Minister Doubts EU 'Drone Wall' Effectiveness Against Russian Aggression

Moscow's air defenses recently intercepted multiple Ukrainian drone attacks, with 111 drones destroyed across various Russian regions and injuries reported in the Moscow area. Meanwhile, European efforts to build a "drone wall" along NATO's eastern borders to protect against Russian drone incursions face significant challenges. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius has emphasized that creating an impenetrable drone defense system is unrealistic and overly ambitious, cautioning that expectations should be tempered despite the potential to reduce drone attack numbers. The proposed drone wall involves layered defenses incorporating radar, acoustic sensors, electronic warfare, and various interceptor systems, but cannot fully prevent drone penetrations across extensive NATO borders. Pistorius also noted that Russia's use of drones is a strategic provocation, aiming to shift NATO's focus to countering inexpensive drones rather than strengthening comprehensive air defenses. NATO and EU countries continue to develop counter-drone tactics and technologies, including training soldiers and procuring laser defense systems, to bolster their defenses amid ongoing tensions.
