US, Germany, India Solar Growth Surges Ahead of Coal in 2025
The United States is rapidly increasing its renewable energy capacity, with solar power and battery storage set to account for 81% of new electricity production in 2025, while coal power continues to decline. In 2024, solar and wind energy together generated more electricity than coal for the first time, making up a combined 17% of the nation’s output compared to coal’s 15%. Texas and California are leading the solar boom, and battery storage is also expanding to help stabilize the grid as renewables grow. The shift away from coal is part of a wider trend across developed countries, with fossil fuels contributing less than half of the US electricity mix for the first time on record in March 2025. Despite policy headwinds, domestic manufacturing of solar modules has increased sharply, indicating strong market momentum for clean energy. Wind power is also growing, although at a slower pace than solar.
