Reds Place Austin Hays on Injured List, Activate Tyler Stephenson
The Cincinnati Reds activated catcher Tyler Stephenson from the injured list after he missed the start of the season with a left oblique strain, while placing outfielder Austin Hays on the 10-day IL with a left hamstring strain, retroactive to April 29. Hays had recently returned from an earlier calf injury and was performing exceptionally well, batting .365 with five home runs and 13 RBIs in just 13 games, but the team is taking a cautious approach due to his history of leg injuries. Stephenson, who hit .258 with 19 home runs last season, may see time at both catcher and designated hitter as the Reds temporarily carry three catchers, with backups Jose Trevino and Austin Wynns also hitting well. With Hays joining Christian Encarnacion-Strand and Jeimer Candelario on the IL, the Reds will rely on outfielders TJ Friedl, Jake Fraley, and Gavin Lux, and may also use Spencer Steer and other right-handed hitters in the outfield mix. The team hopes Stephenson's return can help offset the loss of Hays and provide stability in both the lineup and behind the plate.
