GM Ends BrightDrop EV Van Production Amid Falling Demand, Shifts Focus to Equinox SUVs
General Motors has permanently ceased production of its BrightDrop electric delivery vans at the CAMI Assembly plant in Ingersoll, Ontario, due to slower-than-expected demand in the commercial EV market and a changing regulatory environment, including the end of federal EV tax incentives. Despite a recent sales ramp, with over 3,900 units sold in 2025 and about 4,000 unsold vans remaining in inventory, GM decided not to move production elsewhere and is instead reassessing the plant's future. The Ontario provincial government has threatened legal action against GM for breaching its contract by discontinuing BrightDrop production without committing to a replacement product for the facility. GM CEO Mary Barra acknowledged the impact on employees but cited the evolving market challenges and tariff issues between the U.S. and Canada as key factors in the decision. This move effectively removes BrightDrop as a competitor to Ford's E-Transit, which continues to have a stronger foothold despite its own production delays. Meanwhile, GM is focusing on increasing production of the Chevrolet Equinox at its Fairfax Assembly plant in Kansas, reflecting a strategic pivot towards popular internal combustion engine vehicles and limited-run EV models.
