FDA Approves At-Home Cervical Cancer Test Launch

The FDA has approved the Teal Wand by Teal Health, the first at-home cervical cancer screening test, which is available by prescription. Users self-collect a vaginal sample at home and mail it to a lab for HPV testing, providing a less invasive alternative to traditional Pap smears. Clinical trials demonstrated a 96% accuracy rate for the self-administered test, and 86% of participants reported being more likely to maintain regular screenings with this option. The approval seeks to overcome barriers such as discomfort with pelvic exams and limited access to in-person care, factors that have contributed to declining screening rates. The Teal Wand will launch in California in June, with potential for insurance coverage as a preventive screening.
