Miami-Dade Launches Nation's Longest All-Electric Bus Rapid Transit System
Miami-Dade County has launched its first-ever all-electric Metro Express Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, a $300 million project designed to provide faster, more efficient transit along a 20-mile corridor from Florida City to the Dadeland South Metrorail Station. Featuring 14 express stations with air-conditioned waiting areas, Wi-Fi, charging ports, and indoor bike racks, the system aims to improve commuter experience while reducing travel time by up to 40 minutes compared to driving. The dedicated corridor includes railroad-style gate arms and priority signaling to allow buses uninterrupted travel during peak hours. County officials, including Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, emphasized the project's significance as the longest all-electric BRT system in the U.S. and a major transit expansion since 2012, highlighting its role in connecting residents to jobs, schools, and medical appointments. However, funding challenges remain, with former Mayor and current Rep. Carlos Gimenez noting that while many residents hoped for rail expansion, the BRT system offers a more cost-effective alternative amid limited federal and state support. These financial constraints raise concerns about future transit expansions, as the BRT line may represent the most significant addition to the county's public transportation network for the foreseeable future.
