Cardiff University strike action cancelled as job cuts paused

Strike action at Cardiff University has been called off after an agreement was reached between the University and College Union (UCU) and university management, pledging no compulsory redundancies before the end of 2025. This decision follows months of unrest triggered by proposed cuts, including up to 400 job losses and the potential closure of several departments. While the nursing department may remain open under revised plans, proposed closures of other schools and departmental mergers are still under consultation, with final decisions expected in June. The university attributed its ability to suspend compulsory redundancies this year to a significant number of voluntary redundancies. Despite the agreement, concerns remain among staff and union members about job security beyond 2025, as over 1,200 staff are still considered "in scope" for redundancy. Union leaders have welcomed the immediate reprieve but continue to seek assurances for longer-term job protection and transparent consultation processes.
