Coast Guard Security Fires on U‑Haul at Alameda

Late on Oct. 23, Coast Guard security personnel at Coast Guard Island in Alameda opened fire on a U-Haul after the driver ignored multiple verbal commands and reversed the truck toward the gate and a line of officers on the bridge to the base. Video captured the vehicle backing toward security as officers fired; the Coast Guard said personnel discharged live rounds because the vehicle’s actions posed a direct threat. The shooting followed a daylong protest aimed at blocking Customs and Border Protection/ICE activity at the base, during which demonstrators had tried to stop federal agents from entering. Authorities say two people were struck—one believed to be the driver, who was wounded, initially fled on foot and is being evaluated for mental-health concerns, and a bystander, who was treated at a hospital and released—and no Coast Guard personnel were injured. The FBI is leading the investigation and law enforcement later located the rental truck.
