Trump Administration Unveils Air Traffic Controller Plan

The Trump administration, under Department of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, has announced a plan to address a nationwide shortage of about 3,000 FAA air traffic controllers following several aviation accidents this year. The plan offers $5,000 and $10,000 bonuses for new academy graduates and those willing to work at difficult locations, as well as a 30% salary increase for trainees. To retain experienced controllers, lump-sum payments of 20% of base pay per year will be provided to those delaying retirement past age 56. The FAA is streamlining its hiring and training processes, expanding training resources, and encouraging military veterans to join the civilian controller workforce. The goal is to hire at least 2,000 controllers this year, with full staffing targeted in three to four years. These measures are aimed at maintaining air travel safety amid ongoing staffing challenges.
