Book Exchanges Return to 15 London Tube Stations

London Underground's popular book swap libraries are set to return to 15 surface-level stations after being suspended last month over fire safety concerns, following collaboration between Transport for London (TfL) and the London Fire Brigade (LFB) to develop fire-proof storage solutions. The scheme was initially halted due to regulations prohibiting combustible materials in stations, a policy rooted in safety rules updated after the 1987 King's Cross fire. New compliant cabinets will be installed, starting with High Barnet station, to meet strict fire, accessibility, and security standards. While the mayor and TfL officials emphasized the community value of the book swaps, they also underscored that safety remains the top priority. Sub-surface stations remain excluded for now due to more stringent fire regulations, but authorities are continuing to explore solutions for broader reinstatement. The decision follows public criticism and advocacy for the return of these community assets, with ongoing discussions on balancing safety and community benefit.
