Western Bears Approved for NRL, PNG Team Next
The Australian Rugby League Commission has given in-principle approval to a revised $50 million proposal from the Western Australia government, setting the stage for the Western Bears NRL team to begin competition in Perth in 2027. This marks the North Sydney Bears' return to the top level after 25 years. The WA government has also committed to a $20 million Centre of Excellence and significant grassroots investments. Final approval depends on agreement from the 17 existing NRL clubs and the Rugby League Players’ Association, with expedited meetings scheduled. The NRL will initially operate the team before transitioning ownership to members and elected directors. Plans are also in place for a Papua New Guinea team to join as the 19th NRL franchise in 2028.
