IAEA Reports Most of Iran's Enriched Uranium Intact at Damaged Nuclear Sites
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director Rafael Grossi has revealed that most of Iran's highly enriched uranium stockpile, estimated at around 400 kilograms enriched to 60%, remains intact within the heavily damaged nuclear facilities at Isfahan, Fordow, and Natanz despite Israeli and U.S. airstrikes in June. Satellite imagery indicates ongoing activity at these sites, primarily focused on securing and fortifying entrances rather than removing uranium or centrifuges. Iran has suspended cooperation with the IAEA, complicating efforts to fully assess the condition and disposition of the uranium stockpile, with the IAEA warning that access to these sites will depend on Iran's willingness to cooperate. Western powers France, Germany, and the United Kingdom have threatened to refer Iran's noncompliance to the UN Security Council, emphasizing the importance of restoring agency inspections as part of nuclear non-proliferation commitments. While some uranium likely was destroyed, estimates suggest about 90% remains, enough for multiple nuclear weapons if further enriched, though Iran denies seeking nuclear arms. Grossi advocates for diplomatic engagement to prevent further military conflict and facilitate peaceful resolution.
