San Diego Humane Society Rescues 13 Pets from Abandoned Vista Apartment
In Vista, California, the San Diego Humane Society (SDHS) and law enforcement conducted a challenging four-day rescue operation, saving 11 dogs and 2 cats from hoarding-like conditions in an abandoned, debris-filled apartment. The small dogs, including Pomeranians and Chihuahuas, had created tunnels beneath the stacked trash to move around and were found frightened and suffering from fleas, skin problems, and overgrown nails. The pets are now receiving medical care at SDHS's Oceanside campus and placed under emergency boarding as investigations continue, with additional efforts including traps and cameras to ensure all animals have been accounted for. SDHS Chief of Humane Law Enforcement Jace Huggins described the case as heartbreaking but expressed relief that the animals are safe, emphasizing that such situations often arise when owners face personal challenges and encouraging those struggling to seek help. This rescue occurs amid record levels of dog capacity at the shelter, which is now caring for 792 dogs, prompting urgent calls for community support through adoption, fostering, or donations to continue care for local pets. The extensive cleanup required large dumpsters, additional staff, and deep cleaning to safely remove the pets from the hazardous environment.
