Georgia Deputy Killed, Another Critical After Traffic Stop Shooting
A traffic stop in Columbia County, Georgia, turned deadly when James Blake Montgomery, initially cooperative, opened fire on deputies as they attempted to serve him with a temporary protective order. Deputy Brandon Sikes was killed, and Deputy Gavin White was critically injured after being shot in the face; White remains hospitalized and faces a long recovery. Montgomery used a 9mm AR pistol converted to an automatic weapon and was later found dead inside the motor home after deputies returned fire. Investigators discovered additional firearms and pipe bombs, including one rigged with a remote switch, inside the vehicle. The incident prompted statements of condolence and respect from officials, including Governor Brian Kemp, and highlighted the risks faced by law enforcement in the line of duty. Both deputies were praised for their bravery and dedication to public service.
