Utah Forward Party's Senator Daniel Thatcher Plans Resignation with Voter-Inclusive Successor Selection

Utah Senator Daniel Thatcher, the only member of the Utah Forward Party in the state legislature and a former Republican, announced his resignation ahead of the 2026 legislative session. Thatcher, who has served since 2011 and represents Senate District 11 covering parts of Salt Lake County and Tooele, cited his primary obligation to his constituents and his desire to facilitate a transparent replacement process as reasons for stepping down. His departure will allow the Utah Forward Party to implement a novel, open selection process involving all eligible voters in the district, rather than a closed party delegate appointment, aiming to increase voter participation and challenge the traditional political status quo. Thatcher's switch from the Republican Party earlier this year stemmed from frustrations over the GOP's disconnect with voters and its departure from conservative and freedom-focused values, as well as tensions over social issues like LGBTQ+ rights. Despite health challenges following a stroke in 2022, Thatcher maintained an active role in the Senate and was known for frequently opposing his former party's leadership. The Forward Party hopes this unprecedented approach to appointing Thatcher's successor will restore more representative democracy in Utah's legislative process.
