AAA Forecasts 21.7 Million U.S. Cruisers in 2026
AAA projects a record 21.7 million Americans will take ocean cruises in 2026, up from an estimated 20.7 million in 2025 and marking the fourth consecutive year of record passenger volume. The surge is driven by strong consumer demand, expanded itineraries and ship capacity—mega‑vessels are particularly popular—and the Caribbean accounts for roughly 72% of U.S. cruise passengers. U.S. cruise demographics skew older: about 65% of adult passengers are 55 or older, 27% are 35–54 and 7% are 18–34, with many travelers sailing as couples or in family groups. Recent booking data from Cleveland Research show bookings outperforming expectations, total cruise revenue booked is up about 6% year‑to‑date, booking volume has grown 2–3%, and 2026 sailings are already roughly half booked despite an approximately 4% rise in pricing. Major operators including Viking, Norwegian, Carnival, Royal Caribbean and Celebrity have reported above‑average demand, and river cruising and 2027 bookings are also strong.
