Brazil Indonesia Strengthen Strategic Partnership Sign Multiple Cooperation Deals
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto met in Jakarta to strengthen their countries' strategic partnership, emphasizing their roles as major developing economies in the Global South. They signed eight memorandums of understanding covering cooperation in energy, mining, science, technology, innovation, agriculture, sanitation, and trade, aiming to enhance economic and business ties across sectors including biofuels, green energy, and defense. Both leaders highlighted the significant untapped trade potential between Brazil and Indonesia, with a combined population of nearly 500 million but a modest trade volume of about $6 billion. Discussions also included ambitions to establish a free trade agreement between Indonesia and the South American Mercosur bloc to boost bilateral trade and economic growth. The joint communiqué underscored their shared commitments to international governance reform, combating climate change, and promoting a fair, inclusive international order through multilateral cooperation. Lula's visit marks a renewed political and economic engagement between the two countries, reflecting growing South-South collaboration and convergence on global issues.
