Broncos Sign Marcedes Lewis as Krull Lands on IR
Veteran tight end Marcedes Lewis, 41, signed with the Denver Broncos' practice squad after a tryout this week, marking what would be his 20th NFL season and potentially making him the oldest player in Broncos history if he appears in a game. The move addresses a thin tight-end room after Lucas Krull was placed on injured reserve and Nate Adkins was sidelined by a knee injury, leaving Evan Engram and Adam Trautman as the only healthy tight ends on the active roster. Lewis rushed to Denver after a late call from GM George Paton, completed a workout and physical, and could be elevated from the practice squad as soon as Sunday's game in Houston or promoted to the 53-man roster depending on further roster moves. A 2006 first-round pick, Lewis spent 12 years in Jacksonville, five in Green Bay and two in Chicago and is valued chiefly as a blocker, special-teams contributor and veteran locker-room presence. Coach Sean Payton and teammates praised his conditioning and physical play, and Denver's upcoming decisions on injured players and possible roster/IR moves will determine whether he is temporarily elevated or added to the active roster.
