West Charlotte Suspect Killed After Kidnapping Chase

On Oct. 24 in west Charlotte, an initial shooting near Hoskins Road left one person dead and another critically wounded, police said. Authorities say the suspect then forced his way into a home, kidnapped a woman, stole her car and led officers on a multi-mile pursuit during which he fired at patrol cars before crashing at Freedom Drive and West Morehead Street. After the crash the suspect continued shooting at officers on foot, who returned fire and fatally shot him; a firearm was recovered at the scene. The kidnapped woman was found unharmed near the crash site and four officers were taken to hospitals for precautionary evaluations, with none reported seriously injured. Officers involved are on administrative leave while the State Bureau of Investigation probes the shooting; some outlets have identified the suspect as Joseph Andrade and others as Justin Westbrook Carlton as detectives piece together the timeline.
