Ipswich Town nears £4m signing of West Brom defender Furlong
Ipswich Town is close to signing West Bromwich Albion right-back Darnell Furlong in a deal reportedly worth around £4 million, including a £500,000 add-on if Ipswich achieves promotion to the Premier League. Furlong, 29, who has been a key player and long-throw specialist for West Brom, will join several ex-West Brom players already at Ipswich, such as Alex Palmer, Dara O'Shea, and Conor Townsend. The transfer is seen as a strategic move to strengthen Ipswich's defense following the departure of Axel Tuanzebe and injury concerns to Conor Townsend. West Brom, who consider Furlong dispensable despite his regular starts, have cover options like Krystian Bielik and Isaac Price while potentially seeking a replacement for him. Ipswich also recently signed veteran Ashley Young to bolster the defense, and the club is actively investing in squad depth to push for promotion. The transfer fee provides West Brom with much-needed funds to comply with Championship financial regulations, especially after recent player sales.
