Frerichs Declines Illinois Senate Run; Field Expands

Illinois Treasurer Michael Frerichs has announced he will not run for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Senator Dick Durbin in 2026, prioritizing his family over serving in Washington. Frerichs, who received significant encouragement to enter the race, said he does not want to spend time away from his young children and is fulfilled in his current role. With Frerichs stepping aside, Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton, endorsed by Governor JB Pritzker and Senator Tammy Duckworth, is the most prominent declared Democratic candidate. Other potential contenders now include U.S. Representatives Raja Krishnamoorthi, Lauren Underwood, Robin Kelly, Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias, and former Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel. Frerichs emphasized Illinois needs strong representation in Washington but affirmed his commitment to serving at the state level. The Democratic primary remains open as more candidates consider entering the race.
