Nobuo Uematsu, the celebrated composer behind the music of Final Fantasy, has firmly rejected the use of generative AI in music creation, stating he has never used it and probably never will. He believes that true creativity requires the personal background and emotional hardships of the human creator, which AI lacks, and that the unique imperfections and fluctuations in human performances contribute greatly to the music's appeal. While Uematsu acknowledges that AI might assist in technical aspects such as smooth transitions between tracks, he feels that music composition should be a deeply personal and creative endeavor. He also expressed concerns about the stagnation in video game music, criticizing the trend of imitating film scores and emphasizing the need for originality that AI cannot provide. Despite his stance, Square Enix and other Japanese game companies are increasingly embracing AI technology in game development, including audio elements. Uematsu remains active with new albums and live performances, underscoring his commitment to traditional music creation methods.
