San Jose Bank Robbery Chase Ends in Shooting
Cruz Vargas and Elijah Phillips, both of San Jose, allegedly robbed the Diablo Valley Federal Credit Union in Concord at gunpoint, leading to a multi-county police chase. After their vehicle was disabled in Sunol, they carjacked two vehicles before proceeding to San Jose. There, Vargas crashed the carjacked vehicle and was shot and wounded by Concord police while attempting another carjacking with a modified automatic handgun. Phillips was apprehended nearby with stolen money in his possession. Both face armed robbery, carjacking, weapons charges, and gang enhancements, with Vargas also charged with fleeing police and possessing a machine gun. The officer involved in the shooting is on administrative leave, and investigations by Concord and San Jose authorities are ongoing.
