Phillies honor Hall of Famers Delahanty, Hamilton, Thompson with jersey retirements

The Philadelphia Phillies will honor Baseball Hall of Famers Ed Delahanty, Billy Hamilton, and Sam Thompson, who formed the only outfield in MLB history where each player batted over .400 in a single season (1894). Since these players competed before uniform numbers were introduced, their era-specific insignias will be added to the retired numbers display on the brick wall above Ashburn Alley at Citizens Bank Park and featured on the retired number disks in the left field plaza. The ceremony will take place before a home game against the Washington Nationals. This tribute recognizes the trio’s significant contributions to the team's legacy and places them among other Phillies greats whose numbers or insignias have been retired, including Richie Ashburn, Mike Schmidt, and Jackie Robinson. Phillies leadership emphasized the importance of acknowledging these early legends as the franchise celebrates its 142nd anniversary. The move is intended to celebrate the team's heritage and inspire fans to learn more about its storied past.
