China Sets Ambitious Wind Power Targets Through 2060
China has significantly expanded its wind power capacity targets to support its carbon neutrality and energy transition goals, setting a new goal of 1.3 terawatts by 2030, 2 terawatts by 2035, and 5 terawatts by 2060, representing a substantial increase from previous targets. The Beijing Declaration on Wind Energy 2.0, released at the China Wind Power 2025 conference, calls for annual installations of at least 120 gigawatts of wind power during the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030), including 15 gigawatts from offshore wind. China's wind power capacity has grown rapidly, with cumulative installed capacity reaching over 570 gigawatts by mid-2024, accounting for approximately 15.7% of the country's total installed generation capacity. Leading turbine manufacturers and government policies emphasize accelerating market reforms and expanding renewable energy adoption to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and achieve peak carbon emissions by 2030. This rapid expansion is part of a broader energy transformation, including growth in solar, nuclear, and hydropower, supported by a shift toward market-driven electricity pricing for renewables. China's commitment to wind energy growth is also reflected in global expansion efforts by Chinese wind turbine manufacturers and expectations for wind and solar power to comprise a significant share of energy consumption by 2035.
