Eleven Inmates Escape Orleans Jail; Manhunt Underway
Eleven inmates, several charged with murder and violent offenses, escaped from the Orleans Parish Jail in New Orleans early Friday by exploiting defective cell locks and creating a large hole behind a toilet, in what authorities suspect was an 'inside job' possibly involving staff assistance. The escape went undetected for hours until an 8:30 a.m. headcount, leading to criticism of jail security and delayed public notification. Photos released by officials show a hole in the cell wall with messages indicating premeditation. One inmate was recaptured in the French Quarter, while ten remain at large and are considered 'armed and dangerous.' Sheriff Susan Hutson acknowledged faulty locks and staff shortages contributed to the breach, and Attorney General Liz Murrill called for accountability. The FBI, US Marshals, and other agencies are assisting in the manhunt, and a full investigation into facility security and staff conduct is underway.
