Libya, Rwanda Deny U.S. Migrant Deportation Agreements
The Trump administration is reportedly considering deporting undocumented immigrants to third countries with poor human rights records, including Libya and Rwanda, as a deterrent. Despite reports from U.S. officials about imminent deportation flights, both of Libya's rival governments have firmly denied any agreement or coordination with the U.S., citing violations of national sovereignty. The Tripoli-based Government of National Unity and the eastern administration led by Khalifa Haftar have each rejected the reports and warned against unauthorized negotiations. Libya's internal divisions and lack of legitimate channels for such agreements further complicate the situation. Human rights advocates have raised serious concerns about the safety and legal process for deportees sent to conflict-ridden countries. The Trump administration’s strategy has faced criticism for targeting unstable nations and allegedly bypassing due process.
