Japan, US Accelerate Trade Talks Ahead of June Deal

Japan and the United States are making constructive progress in negotiations to resolve tariff disputes and are aiming to finalize a trade agreement by June. Japanese negotiators have stressed the economic strain caused by U.S. tariffs, particularly on the auto industry, and have urged the U.S. to reconsider these measures, which they describe as deeply regrettable. Discussions have focused on expanding bilateral trade, addressing non-tariff barriers, and enhancing economic security, though significant issues remain unresolved and both sides are cautious about protecting their national interests. Finance Minister Katsunobu Kato suggested Japan's large U.S. Treasury holdings could be used as leverage, though it is unclear if this will be pursued. The next round of talks is expected in mid-May, with a possible agreement to be reached during the G7 summit in June.
