18-Year-Old Arrested Following Fatal South Carolina State University Homecoming Shootings

A weekend shooting at South Carolina State University during the homecoming celebration resulted in the death of 19-year-old Jaliyah Butler and injuries to a male guest and another individual fleeing the scene. Authorities arrested 18-year-old Matthew Daniel McCoy of Richland County in connection with the incidents, charging him with pointing and presenting a firearm at a person and carrying a weapon on school property. Investigators allege McCoy fired a Glock handgun twice at an unidentified male during an altercation between two groups, though it is unclear if anyone was hit by his shots. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is leading the investigation into two shootings that are believed to be unrelated. The university remained on lockdown and canceled classes following the violence, offering counseling services to students and staff.
