Vote Centers Open Ahead Nov. 4 Special Election

Los Angeles County will open 111 vote centers Saturday and keep centers open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., with an online locator (locator.lavote.gov), mailed postcards listing nearby centers and an interactive sample ballot to help voters save time. San Diego County opened more than three dozen vote centers with early voting at the Registrar’s Kearny Mesa office (8 a.m.–5 p.m. weekdays); all San Diego centers open Nov. 1 (8 a.m.–5 p.m.) and on Election Day, Nov. 4, vote centers and drop boxes will be open 7 a.m.–8 p.m., though officials warn fewer locations could mean long lines. Vote centers statewide let people vote in person or drop off mail ballots, use ballot‑marking devices, and register or update registration and vote the same day, including conditional registration. The Nov. 4 special election principally centers on Proposition 50, a measure to redraw California’s congressional districts for 2026–2030 that Gov. Gavin Newsom said would offset partisan moves elsewhere while opponents call it an extreme partisan gerrymander and a threat to fair elections. In San Diego, voters in Poway’s Council District 2 will also decide a recall of Councilmember Tony Blain, and in Detroit eight early voting centers opened for mayoral and City Council contests, including a mayoral matchup between City Council President Mary Sheffield and the Rev. Solomon Kinloch Jr., though organizers expect low turnout. Nevada County inaugurated a new Ballot Processing Center in Grass Valley with about 2,000 square feet for processing and 1,700 square feet of secure warehouse space, increasing daily ballot-processing capacity and observer capacity to roughly a dozen to enhance transparency.
