California Officer Killed Assisting Stranded Driver on Interstate 8

Officer Lauren Craven, a 25-year-old member of the La Mesa Police Department since February 2024, was tragically killed after being struck by a vehicle while assisting motorists on Interstate 8 near Fairmont Avenue. She was returning from San Diego Central Jail when she encountered a crash and stepped out of her patrol car to offer help, at which point she was fatally hit by another driver. The incident also claimed the life of 19-year-old De’Veonte Morris and left four others injured, with one still hospitalized.
