California Officer Killed Assisting Stranded Driver on Interstate 8
Officer Lauren Craven, a 25-year-old member of the La Mesa Police Department since February 2024, was tragically killed after being struck by a vehicle while assisting motorists on Interstate 8 near Fairmont Avenue. She was returning from San Diego Central Jail when she encountered a crash and stepped out of her patrol car to offer help, at which point she was fatally hit by another driver. The incident also claimed the life of 19-year-old De’Veonte Morris and left four others injured, with one still hospitalized. California Highway Patrol is investigating the initial crash that led to this chain reaction, with the cause still undetermined. La Mesa Police Chief Ray Sweeney expressed deep condolences, highlighting Officer Craven's courage, compassion, and dedication to service. This event underscores the dangers law enforcement officers face while assisting on busy freeways, emphasizing the need for driver awareness and adherence to safety laws to protect emergency responders.
