Global Wind Power Capacity Reaches 1,136 GW in 2024

Global wind power installations reached a record high in 2024, with 117 GW of new capacity added, bringing total wind capacity to 1,136 GW. China, the United States, Germany, India, and Brazil led this growth, collectively accounting for the majority of new installations and now holding the highest cumulative capacities worldwide. Despite these gains, the Global Wind Energy Council cautions that growth is uneven, with mature markets dominating while many regions—particularly in the Global South—face regulatory and infrastructure challenges that hinder expansion. Trade tensions and policy volatility, such as the U.S. imposing tariffs on renewable imports from Canada, Mexico, and China, further complicate the industry's outlook and threaten investment certainty. While wind energy continues to drive investment, jobs, and energy security, the sector must navigate these headwinds to sustain global momentum.
