OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Atlas Browser
OpenAI on Tuesday launched ChatGPT Atlas, an AI-powered web browser built on Chromium and unveiled by CEO Sam Altman as a rethink of what a browser can be. Atlas embeds ChatGPT across the interface — with an Ask ChatGPT button, a sidebar that can read and summarize pages, a conversational composer-style search bar, and optional 'memories' for personalized suggestions — while retaining standard browser features like tabs, bookmarks, autofill and incognito. It also offers an agent mode that can click, fill forms and complete tasks for users, though agent functionality and advanced features are initially restricted to Plus, Pro and Business subscribers. The browser launches first on macOS with Windows, iOS and Android versions promised soon, and lets users default searches to ChatGPT or surf via chat-based prompts. OpenAI framed Atlas as a way to capture more search and browsing traffic and potential ad revenue, a move that briefly pushed Alphabet shares lower, while analysts warn of risks including hallucinations, security vulnerabilities, exploitability of agentic AIs, OpenAI’s need to monetize amid ongoing losses, and strong competition in the crowded AI-browser market.
